Remove Scars with Cosmetic Tattooing

Scars may make some people feel self-conscious about how they look. Now there`s a way that some can remove those marks on their skin. What`s amazing for Suzanne Herzner, is an embarrassing scar that`s bothered her for years - but now it`s gone!

Six years ago, Herzner`s doctor removed a basal cell carcinoma from her chest which resulted in a big white scar that made her self-conscious over the years.

"I`m not comfortable wearing v-neck shirts, it`s hard during the summer wearing a bathing suit because it`s a topic of conversation at the pool club, people always ask me, oh what`s that, how did you get that? I always try to cover it up as much as I could, ... and it just doesn`t work," said Herzner.

But now, what has worked is a procedure called para-medical cosmetic tattooing.

"It`s basically tattooing, but I`m using permanent cosmetic pigment and not tattoo ink. I mix and blend camouflaged colors to match the skin around the area that is not hypopigmented, under pigmented or lost its color," said permanent makeup artist Melany Whitney.

Whitney, the founder of The Whitney Center for Permanent Cosmetics, injects color into the patient`s skin using a standard tattoo gun.

Herzner will return for a follow up appointment to see if more pigment is needed, but for now, Whitney says it has completely disappeared because it was a good scar.

"Not all scars are good scars, stretch marks are not good candidates for this, vitilgo is not good candidates for this, but these types of scars that are white, are great, they are really, really receptive," said Whitney.

In addition to camouflaging scars, Whitney also helps patients who suffer from cleft palets, burns, trichotilomania, breast cancer and alopecia.

"Alopecia is an incredible autoimmune disease that i see a lot of... I`ve seen men come in who have lost their brows, women lost their brows and eyelashes, and through medical tattooing, I can give them back the effect of hairs in their brow area, and give them back what looks to be lashes... as long as there is some color there, it`s going to look great," she said.

Although the ink is just a cover up, Whitney says it does wonders for a patient`s self-esteem. "I`m giving them back self-respect, wholeness, their sense that they are beautiful again, that they don`t have a scar or an abnormality..."

This type of permanent tattooing works on every skin color and costs anywhere from $250 to $1,000. Breast restoration is covered by insurance.
