Integrating the use of topical anesthetics into cosmetic or figurative tattooing, body piercing, laser cosmetic procedures and other sensitive skin procedures is easy to do once you understand how each of the products function.

PRE-PROCEDURE ANESTHETICS

for use on unbroken skin

EYZ-A-BLUE

Eyz-A-Blue is a thick, stable pre-procedure topical anesthetic cream containing 3% lidocaine and 2% Tetracaine. It is effective when applied to unbroken skin on the upper and/or lower eyelash lid base and should remain in contact with the skin for 20 minutes or until the numbing effect occurs. Care should be taken to avoid swallowing or direct contact with the eyes. This product is manufactured specifically and only recommended for eyeliner procedures.

PREPCAINE

PREPCAINE is a pre-procedure topical anesthetic cream containing 2% lidocaine and 1.5% Tetracaine. It is only effective when applied to unbroken skin. Prepcaine is safe for all procedures. Care should be taken to avoid swallowing or direct contact with the eyes. The speed and efficiency with which it deadens depends on the thickness and density of the skin and distance from the body trunk. It deadens most quickly on thin skin such as eyeliner (about 15-20 minutes) and more slowly on thicker skin and farther away from the trunk of the body. It is most effective when occluded, or covered with plastic wrap. This plastic covering helps the cream stay moist and in direct contact with the epidermis. This product is recommended for brows, eyeliner, facial and body tattooing.

SUPER TRIO

SUPER TRIO is a pre-procedure triple anesthetic containing 2% tetracaine, 4% lidocaine and 12% benzocaine. It is effective when applied to unbroken skin. It has faster onset than Prepcaine, but less duration. Many people report feeling a "tingling" almost within the first minute after application. Where speed is important, Super Trio is the choice. It is designed to deaden thicker skin applications more rapidly. It is very effective on lip areas. It is not recommended for eyeliner procedures. It can be occluded, and like Prepcaine penetrates the skin without disturbing the epidermis. Put it on, wait 10 or more minutes and go. This product is recommended for body piercing, lip and body tattooing, cosmetic LASER work and waxing sensitive areas.

DUAL-PURPOSE ANESTHETIC

SWIPE

SWIPE is a liquid topical anesthetic containing 6% Benzocaine, 2% Lidocaine and 1.5% Tetracaine. It is used for dual purposes: as a skin cleanser and as a powerful reinforcing anesthetic during the procedure. It is safe for use on all procedures, except eyeliner. It is fast acting and powerful, yet has no burn on open skin contact. "Swipe" across the skin as you work and receive the anesthetic effect in 90 seconds. Unlike Sustaine, it contains no epinephrine or gel so it cannot be overused on the skin. Use it to remove your pre-procedure anesthetics in lieu of alcohol, which stops the action of your anesthetics and changes the pH of the skin. This product not only prepares the skin and removes the anesthetic, but also aids in pre-deadening the dermis of the skin.

DURING PROCEDURE ANESTHETICS

for use on broken skin

SUSTAIN Blue Gel

SUSTAIN Blue Gel topical anesthetic contains 4% Lidocaine, 2% Tetracaine and .02% Epinephrine. It is made for use after the skin has been broken. The addition of epinephrine gives Sustaine Blue Gel two significant benefits: there is a marked reduction in bruising and/or bleeding and Sustaine is effective between 2-5 minutes after application and should last for up to an hour. It is safe for all procedures, although care should be taken to avoid getting it into the eyes.

You should apply Sustaine sparingly after outlining or light shading has opened the skin and leave it on for 2-5 minutes. There is generally no need to reapply. Upon application, Sustaine penetrates to the dermal base, and then extends horizontally through the skin. Five minutes after application when you see a white ring surrounding the tattooed area, those areas are now anesthetized. Thoroughly clean off the Sustaine and begin the procedure. If you open up new areas of skin, you can apply Sustaine to those areas. This product shouldn't be reapplied continuously like most anesthetics, in fact, overuse of this product will reduces the ability of the skin to absorb pigment.

LIQUIDCAINE

LIQUIDCAINE is a 4% Lidocaine topical anesthetic wash. Liquidcaine is for use after the skin has been broken. Liquidcaine is safe for use in all procedures except eyeliner. Use after outlining or on the first pass during a permanent cosmetic procedure, saturate the area, wait 90 seconds and continue. Use throughout the procedure, as there is no problem with over-saturation of the skin.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ANESTHETICS

Maintain your anesthetics at a room temperature of 65°-73° F and store in a dark place away from light. Temperatures above 78° and/or direct exposure to light for long periods of time will reduce their shelf life and effectiveness. Always store topical anesthetics out of the reach of children and if swallowed or ingested contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Use Eyz-A-Blue , Prepcaine or Super Trio to reduce pain on the first pass on permanent cosmetics or during tattoo outlining. Once the skin has been broken and blood flows into the area, the anesthetic effect of Eyz-A-Blue, Prepcaine and Super Trio will be begin to diminish.

Eyz-A-Blue and Prepcaine are effective on eyeliners. Prepcaine and Super Trio will diminish discomfort on eyebrows and lips by at least half. Body tattooing is quite comfortable if the pre-procedure anesthetic is left in contact with the skin for at least 20-60 minutes prior to tattooing.

Use Swipe to remove your pre-deadeners for all procedures except eyeliner: Swipe is not suitable for use around the eyes or eyeliner. This triple anesthetic drives the anesthetic effect down to the dermis and prolongs the action of the pre-deadener. Use Swipe to wipe off the skin during tattooing, piercing or other broken skin procedures. Swipe is a strong anesthetic that hits quickly and holds its anesthetic power for up to an hour. Where speed and ease of use are important, just "swipe and go" throughout your job. Because there is no epinephrine in this product, healing is not affected by its continued use throughout a procedure.

Remove Eyz-A-Blue, Prepcaine or Super Trio before you begin your procedure. Most marking pens used in permanent cosmetics stay intact throughout the deadening period. However, in the case of traditional tattooing, you need to remove the Prepcaine or Super Trio before applying the stencil or your drawing.

Following your first pass of the permanent cosmetic or after outlining, apply Sustaine to the area and wait several minutes before proceeding. Use it sparingly to achieve a profound deadening effect.

Most permanent cosmetic technicians find it useful to do a light outline or basic strokes of one eyebrow then apply the Sustaine, and then move to the second brow. By the time you have completed the first pass on the second brow or eye and applied Sustaine, the first one should be deadened for the duration of the procedure. This one-two punch is the perfect combination for permanent cosmetic procedures.

When applying a lip liner, remove the Prepcaine or Super Trio and make a light scratched line on the edge of the lips, and in the case of full lip color, do a patch-worked fill throughout Oust enough to break the skin lightly), then apply Sustaine and wait for several minutes, and begin slowly working. Additionally, you can wash down with Liquidcaine during the procedure; the epinephrine in Sustaine does a nice job restricting bleeding on the lips.

When applying traditional tattooing, such as an armband or ankle bracelet, remove the Super Trio, place on the stencil, and complete the outline. Then put a squirt of Sustaine on your gloves, rub it into the outline, wait several minutes or until you see the telltale white "ring" and begin. Use Super Trio for thicker skin applications and body piercing. Apply to eyebrows, navels and lips. Wait at least10 minutes and go. Dip your penetrating bar into Sustaine before inserting jewelry to reduce swelling and bleeding.
