Integrating the use of topical anesthetics into cosmetic or figurative tattooing, body piercing, laser cosmetic procedures and other sensitive skin procedures is easy to do once you understand how each of the products function:
| |
| |
PRE-PROCEDURE ANESTHETICS |
| |
PREPCAINE
This topical anesthetic is effective on unbroken skin before work begins. It is safe for use all over the body and for all procedures, although care should be taken to avoid getting it in the eyes. The speed and efficiency with which it deadens depends on the thickness and density of the skin. It deadens most quickly on thin skin such as eyeliner (@l2 minutes) and more slowly on thicker skin, farther away from the trunk of the body (lower legs, for example, require an hour or more). It is most effective when occluded, or covered with plastic wrap. This plastic covering helps the cream stay moist and in direct contact with the epidermis. This product contains 1.5% tetracaine and 2% lidocaine. It penetrates to the dermis with little or no effect to the skin. RECOMMENDED FOR FACIAL TATTOOING, BROWS, EYELINER AND LARGE TATTOO PIECES. |

| |
SUPER TRIO
This triple anesthetic is highly effective on unbroken skin before work begins. It contains 2% tetracaine, 4% lidocaine and 12% benzocaine. It has faster onset than Prepcaine®, but less duration. Many people report feeling a “tingling” almost within the first minute after application. Where speed is the name of the game, this is the choice. It is designed to deaden thicker skin applications more rapidly. It is very effective on lip areas. It is not recommended on eyeliner procedures. It can be occluded, and like Prepcaine® it’s pH penetrates the skin quickly without disturbing the epidermis. Put it on, wait 10 minutes and go. RECOMMENDED FOR PIERCINGS, LIP TATTOOING, SMALLER TATTOO WORK and COSMETIC LASER WORK. |

FOR USE AFTER THE PRE-PROCEDURE ANESTHETIC HAS BEEN APPLIED: |
| |
SWIPE
This liquid anesthetic has a dual purpose: As a skin cleanser and as a powerful anesthetic for use during procedures. It contains three anesthetics: 2% Lidocaine, 1.5% Tetracaine and 6% Benzocaine. It is safe for use on all procedures, except eyeliner.
Use it to remove your pre-procedure anesthetics in lieu of soap or alcohol, which stop the action of your anesthetics and change the pH of your skin. This product not only prepares the skin and removes the anesthetic, but also aids in pre-deadening to the dermis of the skin. Swipe™ is also a highly effective secondary anesthetic for use during sensative procedures. It is fast-acting and powerful, yet has no burn on open skin contact. “Swipe” across the skin as you work and receive an anesthetic effect in 90 seconds. Unlike Sustaine®, it contains no epinephrine or gel so it cannot be overused on the skin. |

FOR USE DURING PAINFUL PROCEDURES |
| |
SUSTAINE
This gel is revolutionary in the tattoo world. It is made for use after the skin has been broken, or in other words, during painful procedures. This product contains the highest over-the-counter levels available of tetracaine and lidocaine, and is safe for use in all procedures although care should be taken to avoid getting it into the eyes. SUSTAINE® IS NOT A PRE-DEADENER.
It has two benefits:
The addition of epinephrine allows this gel to extend the life of your predeadener for up to two hours! |
There is a marked reduction in bruising or bleeding. This gel is effective between 2-5 minutes after application and it should last for up to two hours. |
Apply Sustaine® sparingly after outlining or light shading has opened the skin and leave it on for five minutes. There is generally no need to reapply. After application, Sustaine® penetrates to the dermal base, and then extends horizontally through the skin. Five minutes after application when you see a white ring surrounding the tattooed area, those areas are now anesthetized. Thoroughly clean off the Sustaine® and begin the procedure. lf you open up new areas of skin, you can reapply Sustaine® to those areas. This product doesn't need to be reapplied continuously like most anesthetics used during tattooing. ln fact, overuse of the product will result in saturation of the skin, which reduces the ability of the skin to absorb pigment. So outline your tattoo, or make your first pass in your permanent makeup procedure, apply Sustaine®, wait 5 minutes, wipe clean, and work for up to two hours. |

| |
LIQUIDCAINE
This 4% lidocaine wash is versatile and quite popular. lt is made for use after the skin has been broken, during the tattooing procedure. lt has no ability to pre-deaden. It is safe for use in all procedures except eyeliner. It has no odor or perfumed additives, so there is no sensation at all when it is applied. For this reason, avoid contact with children. After applying outlining or after the first pass on a permanent makeup procedure, saturate the area with Liquidcaine™, wait 90 seconds and continue. Use throughout a procedure, as there is no problem with oversaturating the skin. |

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ANESTHETICS
Keep your anesthetics at room temperature 65°-73° F to extend their life. Keep them in a dark place away from light. Temperatures above 78° or direct exposure to light for long periods of time will reduce shelf life and their effectiveness. All topical anesthetics must be kept out of the reach of children. |
Prepcaine® has been shown to be effective on eyeliners, and to diminish discomfort on eyebrows and lips. Body tattooing is quite comfortable if the anesthetic is left in contact with the skin for at least one hour prior to tattooing. Once the Prepcaine® has been removed, the anesthetic effect begins to diminish. |
Use the Prepcaine® or Super Trio® to reduce pain on the first pass on permanent cosmetics or during tattoo outlining. Once the skin has been broken and blood flows into the area, the anesthetic effect of the Prepcaine® will be greatly diminished. |
Use Swipe™ to clean your skin prior to the application of Prepcaine®, Super Trio® or other predeadeners. Apply with a cotton ball, cotton pad, or other absorbent material. Not suitable for eyeliner procedures. |
Use Swipe™ to remove your predeadeners for every procedure except eyeliner. Simply wipe away your predeadeners. This triple anesthetic drives down the anesthetic to the dermis and prolongs the action of the predeadener. Use Swipe™ to wipe off the skin during tattooing, piercing or other broken skin procedures. Swipe™ is a strong anesthetic that hits quickly and holds its anesthetic power for up to an hour. Where speed of anesthesia and ease of use are important, just “swipe and go” throughout your job. Because there is no epinephrine in this product, healing of tattooing is not affected by its continued use throughout a procedure. |
Wipe off your Prepcaine® or Super Trio® before you begin your procedures. Most marking pens used in permanent cosmetics stay intact throughout the deadening period, but in the case of traditional tattooing, first remove the Prepcaine®, and then apply the stencil or drawing before beginning. |
Use Super Trio® for thicker skin applications and body piercing. Apply to eyebrows, navels and lips. Wait 10 minutes and go. Dip your penetrater bar into Sustaine® before inserting jewelry to reduce swelling and bleeding. |
Following your first pass on permanent cosmetics, or after outlining, apply Sustaine® to the area and wait several minutes before proceeding. Use it sparingly to achieve a profound deadening effect. |
When applying permanent cosmetics, most technicians find it useful to do a light outline or basic strokes of one eyebrow or eyeliner, apply the Sustaine®, and then move to the second brow or eyeliner. By the time you have completed the first pass on the second brow or eyeliner and applied Sustaine®, the first one will be deadened for the duration of the procedures. This one-two punch is the perfect combination for permanent makeup procedures. |
When applying a lip liner, after removing your Prepcaine®, make a light scratch line on the edge of the lips, and in the case of full lip color, do a patch-worked fill throughout (just enough to break the skin lightly). Then apply Sustaine®, wait for at least 5 minutes, and begin slowly working. Additionally you can wash down with Liquidcaine™ throughout the procedure, although the epinephrine in Sustaine® restricts bleeding nicely on the lips. |
When applying traditional tattooing, such as an armband or ankle bracelet, remove the Prepcaine® or Super Trio®, place the stencil, and complete the outline. Then put a squirt of Sustaine® on your gloves, rub it into the outline, wait several minutes or until you see the telltale white "ring" and begin. |
